Can I make phone calls or send SMS with my eSIM?

Quick answer

Our packages are data-only unless the package description explicitly includes voice or text. That means no ordinary phone calls and no standard SMS over the eSIM line - but internet-based calling and messaging work normally over the data.

What works on a data-only eSIM

• WhatsApp, FaceTime, Signal, Telegram, Messenger and similar apps, for both calls and messages.
• iMessage, when configured to use your email address. See can I use iMessage with my eSIM.
• Any service that runs over the internet rather than the telephone network.

Keeping your normal number

Leave your home SIM in the phone and switched on for calls and texts, while the eSIM carries data. Calls and SMS on that line are billed by your home operator at its roaming rates - see can I receive phone calls on my primary number.

Important

Check the package description before buying if voice or SMS matters to you. A few packages do include an allowance, and where they do it is stated on the package - never assume it.
