Can I use iMessage with my eSIM?

Last updated: 2026-09-03

Quick answer

Yes, provided iMessage is set to use your Apple Account email address. iMessage travels over data, so it works on a data-only eSIM - but activating or sending from your phone number relies on your normal carrier line, which a data-only package cannot provide.

Steps

  1. Before you travel, on your usual network, open Settings > Apps > Messages > Send & Receive.
  2. Check that your Apple Account email address is ticked under both the receive and send-from lists.
  3. Set Start New Conversations From to your email address.
  4. Do the same in Settings > Apps > FaceTime if you use it.

What to expect abroad

  • Messages to and from other Apple users arrive over data as normal.
  • Standard SMS text messages are not carried by a data-only eSIM. Those need your home line.
  • People who only have your phone number may see messages fail to send as iMessage and fall back to SMS, which will use your home carrier.

Important

Set this up before you leave. Adding a phone number to iMessage can require an SMS from your home line, which may be unavailable or expensive once you are abroad.
