Why am I seeing the "Unable to Activate eSIM" error on iOS?

Last updated: 2026-09-03

Quick answer

This message means the iPhone could not download and install the eSIM profile. It is an installation failure, not a problem with your data package. The usual causes are an already-used code, a carrier-locked iPhone, or an internet connection that blocks the download.

Why this happens

  • The code has already been used. eSIM codes are normally single-use, so a second attempt fails.
  • The iPhone is carrier locked. Check Settings > General > About > Carrier Lock.
  • The Wi-Fi network blocks the download. Captive-portal, hotel, airport, and corporate networks are frequent culprits.
  • The details were mistyped during manual entry.
  • iOS is significantly out of date.

What to try

  1. Switch to a different, unrestricted Wi-Fi network and retry.
  2. Restart the iPhone and try once more.
  3. If you were typing details, re-check the SM-DP+ address and activation code character by character. See manual installation.
  4. Install any pending iOS update.
  5. Confirm Carrier Lock reads No SIM restrictions.

Important

Do not keep retrying repeatedly. If the profile was in fact installed on an earlier attempt, further attempts will always fail. Check Settings > Cellular for the line first, then contact us with your order email before buying a replacement.
