Using & Managing eSIMs
Why don't I see 5G in the status bar on my iPhone?

Quick answer
The status bar reports the network your iPhone is actually connected to at that moment. Seeing LTE or 4G instead of 5G usually means the roaming network you are on is not providing 5G here, or iOS has chosen 4G deliberately.
Why this happens
- Many roaming agreements provide 4G only, even where the local operator runs a 5G network for its own customers.
- Smart Data Mode drops to LTE when 5G brings no practical benefit, to save battery. This is normal behaviour.
- 5G coverage is patchy in many areas and indoors especially.
- The line's Voice & Data setting may be set to LTE.
What you can check
- Settings > Cellular > select the eSIM line > Voice & Data, and see whether 5G options are offered at all.
- If 5G Auto is selected, that is the recommended setting - iOS is managing it for you.
- Compare against the supported networks listed with your package.
Important
The status bar indicator is not a measure of whether your package is working. If pages load and apps work, the connection is fine. If they do not, see why is my eSIM internet so slow.
