How can I save data usage on my Android device?

Last updated: 2026-09-03

Quick answer

Turn on Data Saver, stop background apps using mobile data, and keep anything large on Wi-Fi. Most of a travel package is usually consumed by background activity rather than what you are actively doing.

Settings that make the biggest difference

  1. Turn on Data Saver: Settings > Network & internet > Data Saver on Pixel, or Settings > Connections > Data usage > Data saver on Samsung.
  2. Restrict background data for apps you do not need while travelling.
  3. Set the Play Store to update apps over Wi-Fi only.
  4. Set photo and cloud backup to Wi-Fi only. This is often the single largest consumer.
  5. Lower video streaming quality, and download maps or playlists before you leave.

Habits that help

  • Download offline maps for your destination while on Wi-Fi at home.
  • Turn the hotspot off when you are not deliberately using it.
  • Watch video on Wi-Fi where you can - it uses far more than everything else combined.

Keep an eye on it

Check remaining data at /app/esims during your trip, and consider a hard cap - see how do I set a data limit on my Android device.
